A500.8.3.RB - Good Presentation Design

The advancement of technology has come a long way since Microsoft started with the original office program using power point. In order to give a great presentation, the preparation and presentation require a few key elements. First, the presenter needs to do research as part of the preparation. One must have knowledge pertaining to the topic they will be presenting and then prepare for the presentation. A great presentation involves technology, an audience, and the presenter.
First, technology and understanding software is important for a presentation. A presenter should not step on stage and use a program they are not familiar with using, this may be embarrassing and difficult to overcome. Trying out new technology for the first is not recommended for a presentation. The presenter should be prepared for questions about the information on the slides pertaining to images, data, and details presented. A great presentation should be well put together with images, motion, and personal stories to keep the audience's attention; death by power point should be avoided if at all possible.

Second, the presenter should get to know the audience before the presentation. Getting to know the audience, the presenter will become comfortable speaking and feel more confident presenting. While presenting, it is important to project your voice, stand up straight, and never turn your back to the audience. If during the presentation an audience member asks a question you the answer is not known at that time, be honest, and tell the individual you will get back to them with the answer. This will prevent embarrassment and also let the individual know you care. Finally, it is important to make connections with your audience; this can be done by telling personal stories because the audience feels connected when they can relate to the speaker.

Finally, the presenter should be prepared, confident, and knowledgeable. In order to be prepared, the presenter should practice ahead of time and feel confident with the material being presented. Also, have note cards ready and available in case of losing focus because of questions. The most important detail a presenter should remember is confidence; regardless of what happens, confidence will show.
